What Is Google AI Mode? How It Works and What It Cites (2026)

What Google AI Mode is, how query fan-out works, how it differs from AI Overviews, how ads and Search Console treat it, plus our test of what it cites for B2B queries.

The short answerGoogle AI Mode is the conversational search mode inside Google Search. You ask a question in text, voice, images or files; AI Mode splits it into subtopics, searches them at the same time, writes one answer with source links and takes follow-ups. The standard version needs no subscription.

Most explainers stop there. We ran 86 B2B marketing queries through AI Mode and through the classic results page with its AI Overview on 21 October 2026. AI Mode mostly cited pages that were not among the page-one organic results for the same query.

What is Google AI Mode?

AI Mode is a separate mode of Google Search that answers your question as a written response, with links, and keeps the conversation going. Google's help page describes it as a way to get an AI-powered response "with the ability to go deeper through follow-up questions and helpful links to the web." Google first launched it on 5 March 2025 as a Search Labs experiment that, in its words, "expands what AI Overviews can do with more advanced reasoning, thinking and multimodal capabilities".

You get to it three ways, per Google's help page: go to google.com/ai, type a question on google.com and tap AI Mode, or tap AI Mode on the Google app's home screen. Chrome is adding it to the address bar too, though Google says "AI Mode in Chrome is not available to everyone or on every device at this time."

Google positions AI Mode for the harder questions. Its Search Central page on AI features says "AI Mode is particularly helpful for queries where further exploration, reasoning, or complex comparisons are needed." That is exactly the shape of a B2B buying question: which vendor, for which use case, at what price, compared with what.

How does Google AI Mode work?

The core mechanism is query fan-out. Google says AI Mode works by "dividing your question into subtopics and searching for each one simultaneously across multiple data sources," then "brings those results together to provide an easy-to-understand response." At I/O 2025 Google put it as "breaking down your question into subtopics and issuing a multitude of queries simultaneously on your behalf." We break down what those sub-searches look like in our guide to fan-out queries.

  1. The model changes often. AI Mode launched on a custom version of Gemini 2.0, moved to a custom Gemini 2.5 in May 2025, and at I/O 2026 (19 May 2026) Google made "Gemini 3.5 Flash" "the new default model in AI Mode for everyone globally." In October 2026 the help page also lists a Gemini 4 Argon option for Google AI Pro and Ultra subscribers 18 and above, with daily limits.
  2. It takes more than text. You can ask "with text, voice, images or files," or paste a URL and ask about the page.
  3. Follow-ups count as new searches. Google's Search Console documentation says that "If a user asks a follow-up question within AI Mode, they are essentially performing a new query."
  4. Deep Search goes further. Google says "Deep Search uses the same query fan-out technique but taken to the next level. It can issue hundreds of searches", and returns a fully cited report in minutes. It launched for Google AI Pro and Ultra subscribers.
  5. It can decline to answer. "In some cases, AI Mode will provide a set of web links if there's not high enough confidence in the quality or helpfulness of an AI response."

The answer sits on Google's normal index and ranking systems. Google's launch post says AI Mode "is rooted in our core quality and ranking systems". Our data shows how loosely that root holds once AI Mode picks its sources.

AI Mode vs AI Overviews: what's the difference?

AI Overviews are the summaries Google drops at the top of a normal results page. AI Mode is the full conversation you choose to enter. Google's own split: AI Overviews "help people get to the gist of a complicated topic or question more quickly," while AI Mode is for the questions that need more reasoning and side-by-side comparison.

  • Who decides. AI Overviews appear when Google judges them useful, and Google says they "often don't trigger". In our test they did trigger on 83 of 86 B2B marketing queries. AI Mode answers whatever you type into it.
  • Depth. AI Mode keeps context across follow-ups. Since I/O 2026, a follow-up typed under an AI Overview moves you into AI Mode.
  • Models and links. Google says plainly: "AI Mode and AI Overviews may use different models and techniques, so the set of responses and links they show will vary."
  • Turning it off. Google says AI Overviews are a core Search feature and "Features cannot be turned off", though the Web filter shows plain links. AI Mode is a mode you choose. We found no Google page with a setting that switches it off, and its answers appear once you open it or ask a follow-up under an AI Overview.

The line between them is blurring. On Alphabet's Q2 2026 earnings call (22 July 2026), Pichai said Google had recently brought AI Overviews and AI Mode together into one Search experience. The separate AI Mode pages and help documents still exist as of October 2026, and in our capture the two surfaces still cited mostly different pages for the same query. Treat them as two surfaces until Google's data says otherwise. If AI Overviews are your main concern, our AI Overviews optimization guide covers them in depth.

What AI Mode cites for B2B buying questions: our data

Google says its AI features show "a wider and more diverse set of helpful links associated with the response than with a classic web search". We wanted to know how much wider, for the queries our buyers actually type.

Method. We took the non-branded queries we track for our own site: B2B SaaS marketing, SEO and AI-search terms with at least 50 US searches a month and commercial or informational intent. For each one, we captured on 21 October 2026, from the US in English on desktop, the AI Mode answer with its source links and the page-one organic results (usually 9 organic links at the depth we captured) with the AI Overview and its links. The set held 116 queries, and 86 have both captures; only those 86 are analysed. The 30 we excluded sit almost entirely at the end of the list, at positions 67 and 88 to 116. We matched URLs after stripping protocol, www, query strings (keeping YouTube video ids), fragments and trailing slashes.

What we found.

  • Only 14.5% of AI Mode's source links were among the page-one organic results for the same query. That is 88 of 607 links across 76 answers that carried sources. At the domain level the overlap rises only to 23.9%.
  • More than half of the sourced AI Mode answers (42 of 76) cited no page-one result at all. Only 4 of 76 drew most of their sources from page one.
  • Ranking first does not buy you a citation. The organic number-one result was among AI Mode's sources in 16 of 76 answers.
  • AI Overviews stay closer to the classic ranking. 22.6% of their links (159 of 705) were page-one results, and 46 of 83 cited at least one.
  • The two AI surfaces disagree. Across 73 queries where both carried links, only 284 of 916 query-level source URLs (31.0%) appeared in both answers for that query. 12 queries shared no source at all.
  • Video and forums carry real weight. YouTube (82 links) and Reddit (41) together made up 20.3% of AI Mode's links. The other 79.7% (484 links) came mostly from company and publisher sites, which on their own accounted for 75.3% of all its links.

The pattern held across intent: 15.0% of AI Mode's links on commercial queries were page-one results, and 13.2% on informational ones.

The limit: this is one capture per query, on one day, from one location, for 86 of the 116 queries we planned. AI answers change between runs, and 10 of the 86 AI Mode answers came back without source links in our capture. The direction matches what Google itself says about wider links.

Where is AI Mode available, and is it free?

AI Mode went from a Labs test to a global product in about seven months:

  1. 5 March 2025: an opt-in Search Labs experiment, with Google One AI Premium subscribers invited first.
  2. 20 May 2025 (I/O): rolled out to everyone in the U.S., with "no Labs sign-up required."
  3. 21 August 2025: expanded to over 180 new countries and territories in English.
  4. 8 September 2025: Hindi, Indonesian, Japanese, Korean and Brazilian Portuguese added.
  5. 7 October 2025: "Now, AI Mode will be available in over 200 countries and territories total". In October 2026 the help page lists 98 languages.

Usage followed. At I/O 2026 Google said "AI Mode has surpassed one billion monthly users, with queries more than doubling every quarter since launch," and repeated the 1 billion figure on the Q2 2026 earnings call. People also ask it longer questions: Google says "nearly three times longer than traditional searches."

On price, no subscription is needed for the standard version: the US rollout had no sign-up and the default model is for everyone. Google AI Pro and Ultra subscribers get extras: Deep Search and stronger models (Gemini 2.5 Pro in 2025, the Gemini 4 Argon option in October 2026), with usage limits.

Does Google AI Mode show ads?

Yes, as a test. At Google Marketing Live in May 2025 Google said "We're also starting to test ads in AI Mode," adding "Where relevant, ads may appear below and integrated into AI Mode responses." Google said advertisers running Performance Max, Shopping and broad-match Search campaigns, AI Max included, would be eligible.

At Google Marketing Live 2026 (20 May 2026), Google described new formats in testing, including Conversational Discovery ads, where "your ad answers a person's specific question," and Highlighted Answers inside AI Mode's recommendation lists. Google's own pages still call ads in AI Mode a test, and the only market they name is the US. Ads in AI Overviews are past that stage: Google introduced them in the US in 2024 and expanded them to desktop and more countries in 2025.

For a B2B marketer this means the paid and the earned answer can now sit in the same box. We compared the two for ChatGPT in ChatGPT Ads vs earned AI citations; the same question is coming to Google.

How does AI Mode show up in Search Console?

AI Mode traffic is already in your Search Console, but it is mixed in with everything else. Google says AI features traffic is "included in the overall search traffic in Search Console", inside the Web search type. Its help page adds: "Clicking a link to an external page in AI Mode counts as a click," and "Position in AI Mode follows the same methodology as a Google Search results page".

Since 31 August 2026, every site also has Search Console's generative AI performance reports, which show impressions by page, country, device and date. The launch post lists no click metric for them, so read them as a visibility signal. Labs experiments are excluded from Search Console data.

You cannot filter AI Mode clicks out in the standard report. To see whether your brand is named inside AI Mode answers, and next to whom, you have to read the answers themselves. Our guide to the AI visibility audit covers what that read checks.

What Google AI Mode means for B2B brands

Start with what Google says, because it is clear: "There are no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode, nor other special optimizations necessary." Google adds that you need no special schema.org markup, and it names no AI text file among the requirements. To be eligible as a source, "a page must be indexed and eligible to be shown in Google Search with a snippet". Sites control what shows through Googlebot in robots.txt and snippet controls, and Google says Google-Extended "does not impact a site's inclusion in Google Search".

We agree with all of that, and it still leaves the hard part. Eligibility gets you into the pool. Our data says the pool AI Mode picks from is much wider than page one: 85.5% of its links in our test were not page-one organic results for the query. So a page-one ranking, on its own, is a weak predictor of whether AI Mode cites you.

We would put the effort in four places.

  • Answer the sub-questions as well as the head term. Fan-out searches the parts of the question separately. A page that answers "pricing for X", "X for fintech" and "X vs Y" in clean, self-contained blocks gives AI Mode something to lift for each part. Put the answer at the top of each section, as covered in how to structure content for AI extraction.
  • Treat Google as a distribution problem. YouTube and Reddit carried 20.3% of AI Mode's links in our test. If your category's answers lean on video and forum threads and you have neither, no on-page fix closes that gap.
  • Measure the answer, then the rank. Search Console will tell you clicks, but not whether AI Mode named you or a rival. Track the answers on the questions your buyers ask, per surface, never blended.
  • Do not chase files Google says you do not need. Google lists no AI text file among its requirements. We looked at who actually reads one in llms.txt explained.

AI Overviews and AI Mode sit on top of Google's live index, and Google says AI Mode now has 1 billion monthly users. That makes Google's AI answers the most underrated surface for B2B SaaS, and their clicks already sit inside the Web totals you read in Search Console. If AI Overviews are your starting point, our AI Overviews service tracks where you stand in them.

Frequently asked questions.

Answers to the questions readers ask most about this topic.

Is Google AI Mode free?
The standard version needs no subscription. Google rolled it out to everyone in the U.S. in May 2025 with no Labs sign-up, and its default model is for everyone globally. Google AI Pro and Ultra subscribers get extras such as Deep Search and stronger models. The Gemini 4 Argon option has daily usage limits.
Can you turn off Google AI Mode?
AI Mode is a mode you choose: the AI Mode tab, google.com/ai or the AI Mode button in the Google app. We found no Google page with a setting that switches it off, and a follow-up under an AI Overview also moves you into it. AI Overviews are different. Google says they are a core Search feature that cannot be turned off, though the Web filter shows a page of plain links.
Does AI Mode replace AI Overviews?
Not yet. On Alphabet's Q2 2026 earnings call Google said it had brought AI Overviews and AI Mode together into one Search experience, and a follow-up under an AI Overview now moves you into AI Mode. Both still exist as separate surfaces, and in our October 2026 test only 31.0% of the source links on the same query appeared in both answers.
What model does Google AI Mode use?
Since I/O 2026 (19 May 2026), Gemini 3.5 Flash is the default model in AI Mode for everyone globally. In October 2026, Google's help page also lists a Gemini 4 Argon option for Google AI Pro and Ultra subscribers 18 and above. AI Mode launched on a custom version of Gemini 2.0 in March 2025.
Does Google AI Mode show ads?
Google is testing ads in AI Mode, which may appear below and inside its answers. In May 2025 Google said Performance Max, Shopping and broad-match Search campaigns, AI Max included, would be eligible. Google's pages still describe the AI Mode formats as tests and name only the US as a market. Ads in AI Overviews are live: Google introduced them in the US in 2024 and expanded them to desktop and more countries in 2025.
Can a website opt out of AI Mode?
Google says robots.txt directives for Googlebot are the control, and that nosnippet, data-nosnippet, max-snippet or noindex limit what shows from a page. Google-Extended does not affect inclusion in Google Search. A page that is not eligible for a snippet cannot be a source in AI Mode.
Is AI Mode traffic in Google Search Console?
Yes. Google counts AI Mode in the Web search type of the Performance report: a click on a link in AI Mode counts as a click, and position follows normal results-page rules. The standard Performance report has no separate AI Mode filter. Since 31 August 2026, every site also has generative AI performance reports, a separate view that shows impressions.
