SEO Agent: What an AI SEO Agent Can Do for B2B SaaS, What It Costs, and When to Hire Help

What an SEO agent can do on its own, task by task, what the four types cost, and when a B2B SaaS team should buy a tool, build an agent or hire help.

What an SEO agent can and can't do on its own

SEO taskCan an agent do it alone? What the evidence saysWhat a person still owns
Tracking whether AI engines name youYesMonitoring agents such as Peec AI and Otterly.AI run a fixed set of prompts through the AI engines every dayDeciding what the numbers mean for pipeline and revenue
Keyword and SERP researchWith light reviewAhrefs says SEO suits agents because the work is sequential: keyword research informs the brief, and competitor gaps shape the outlineWhich keywords are worth winning for your business
Drafting articlesWith reviewEntry plans ship 10 (Frase), 15 (Writesonic) or 30 (The SEO Agent) articles a month. Surfer says agents are prone to hallucinationsEvery fact, quote and number before it goes live
Checking factsPartlyThe SEO Agent sells fact-checked drafts with citations. None of the vendor pages we read describes a second, independent check after the draft is writtenA second read by someone who did not write the draft
Publishing to your CMSYes, if you allow itFrase: "The agent publishes on its own when you let it." The SEO Agent: "nothing publishes until you say so"Whether a piece should go live at all
Changing the live siteWith reviewAlli AI deploys titles, schema and internal links through one snippetReviewing every change to production
Getting pages indexedNoGoogle says a sitemap "doesn't guarantee that all the items in your sitemap will be crawled and indexed"Reading Search Console's own record for each page
Strategy and positioningNoAhrefs: the editorial judgment and the strategic priority "stays with you"All of it
Staying inside Google's rulesNoGoogle warns that generating many pages without adding value for users may violate its policy on scaled content abuseWhether each page adds something new

One row earns a plain "Yes". Three sit at "No": indexing, strategy and Google's rules. Those three decide whether the work pays off, and none of them shows up as an error. An agent can run the tasks in between faster than a person. It cannot tell you whether the result was worth publishing.

What an SEO agent is, and what it is not

The vendors that write about the term agree on the core. Ahrefs puts it this way: "An AI SEO agent is software that actually does the SEO work, as opposed to just describing it." Gumloop calls it an autonomous workflow, "initially created by an SEO professional". Frase uses the term agentic SEO for a system that acts on what it finds instead of only reporting it.

The vendors also agree on the limit. Surfer's explainer says "AI agents are not completely autonomous yet." Ahrefs notes that "Most good ones have human approval steps built in."

Four things get called an SEO agent, and they are different purchases:

What it isWhat it doesExample
ChatbotAnswers questions in a chat window. On its own it has no access to your rankings, search volumes or Search Console dataChatGPT or Claude with no tools connected
WorkflowRuns a fixed sequence of steps someone designed, with a model inside some of themGumloop's proofreading flow, which Gumloop itself labels a workflow
AgentChooses its own next step and which tool to call, toward a goalAn agent that decides which pages to read next
AI writing toolDrafts and optimises a document, usually one at a timeA content editor with a one-click article writer

Anthropic draws the workflow and agent line precisely. Workflows "are systems where LLMs and tools are orchestrated through predefined code paths." Agents direct their own process and tool use. Anthropic's advice is to use the simplest setup that works, and it names the price of autonomy: higher costs and "the potential for compounding errors".

By that definition, a product that runs steps someone designed in a fixed order is a workflow, whatever its landing page calls it. That is fine. A fixed sequence is easier to check than an agent that improvises, and checking is where most of the value sits.

Ahrefs' guide lists one build option as connecting a chatbot to SEO data through MCP (Model Context Protocol), the open standard that links an AI application to outside tools. It states the limit plainly: "MCP exposes a subset of each provider's data", and the setup runs on your laptop unless you build hosting.

Do SEO agents actually work?

Yes, for narrow jobs you can check. No, if you hand over the whole job and stop looking. On 1 October 2026, one of Google's top three results for "seo agent" was a Reddit thread asking "Do AI SEO Agents actually work? Looking for real results". The question is fair, and the vendors answer it more honestly than their landing pages do.

They admit the autonomy gap. Surfer says agents "still require significant human involvement to get good results". Frase writes that agentic SEO "still benefits from human editorial judgment and brand expertise."

They ship a human gate. The SEO Agent offers an optional outline approval and a quality gate. seo.ai lets you choose automatic publishing, drafts or review, and says its own SEO specialists make spot checks. Frase gives you an autonomy setting. Each product puts a person somewhere in the loop.

Errors compound. Anthropic's warning about agents applies directly to SEO, because each stage feeds the next. A wrong number in the research becomes a wrong claim in the draft, and that claim gets published, indexed and quoted back by an AI engine. Unless a person checks the research before the draft starts, that wrong number travels all the way to the live page.

Google does not care who wrote it. Google says generative AI "can be particularly useful when researching a topic, and to add structure to original content." Its spam policy on scaled content abuse applies "no matter how it's created". A thousand agent-written pages that add nothing are a risk, not an asset.

At LoudFace, we think AI-written content can beat human-written content, but it does not come out of a chat window. It takes a system: rich data, a knowledge base of what the company actually believes, a loop that checks the work, and people who decide what is worth saying. Very few teams have set one up and run it well, and that gap matters more than which software you buy.

The tasks that suit an agent are the ones you can define and check, such as research, first drafts and tracking. Keep the calls on what to publish and what to claim with a person who knows the business.

SEO agent tools, grouped by what they do

Every price below comes from the vendor's own pricing page, read in a browser on 1 October 2026, with billing toggles checked where the page has one. We found no neutral benchmark for which SEO agent is best, so pick by the job you need done.

How the four types differ in practice

Monitoring agents (Peec AI, Otterly.AI, Profound) run a fixed set of prompts through the AI engines on a schedule and report whether you are named. That answers "are we in the answer". Whether it made pipeline takes a revenue read beside it. Our free audit uses data from Peec AI, and our comparison of AEO tools goes deeper on tracking.

Content agents (Writesonic, Frase, Surfer, The SEO Agent, seo.ai) research, draft and in some cases publish. Profound's AI Marketer now researches and writes as well. Before you switch on unattended publishing, name the person who reads each piece.

Execution agents (Alli AI) change the live site: titles, schema, internal links and pre-rendering, deployed through one snippet. seo.ai's execution side sits off the site: its plan builds backlinks and runs Google Ads. Alli AI touches production, so the review step matters more here than anywhere else.

Builders (Claude, Gumloop, n8n, Letaido) are where you assemble your own agent. You get full control over every step, and you also own every failure an agent cannot catch on its own. In its May 2026 guide, Ahrefs still calls its product Agent A; ahrefs.com/agent-a now redirects to Letaido.

SEO agent or SEO agency: buy, build, or hire

OptionWhat it costsWhat you still ownBest for
Buy an agent tool$25 to $299 a month at entry tier where a price is published; several offer a free trialStrategy, fact checks, the rendered page, indexingFor teams with an editor who will read every piece
Build your own$0 on Claude's free plan to $99 a month for Letaido (n8n cloud from €24), plus your build and maintenance timeEvery check, plus hosting and data accessFor teams with an engineer who wants full control
Hire an agency$2,000 to $30,000 or more a month for AEO retainers, per Stackmatix; LoudFace from $5k a monthThe decisions only you can make: positioning, priorities, approvalsFor teams that want the system and the checks run for them
Hire in-house$80,000 to $150,000 a year for an AEO specialist, per StackmatixTools, process and review capacityFor teams with enough volume for a full-time hire

The agency numbers vary a lot by source. Stackmatix, an agency, prices AEO retainers at $2,000 to $5,000 a month for monitoring and recommendations, $5,000 to $15,000 for active optimization and content, and $15,000 to $30,000 or more for full strategy and execution. An older read comes from an Ahrefs survey of 439 SEO providers, last updated in August 2024, where the most common agency retainer was $500 to $1,000 a month. The two measure different things: Stackmatix prices AEO programs in 2026, and the Ahrefs data predates 2025.

The choice is rarely agent or agency. A good agency in 2026 runs agents too. What you pay an agency for is the system around the agents and the people who judge the output. They decide which buyer questions are worth winning and what your company can credibly claim, and they hold back a draft that is not ready to publish.

LoudFace is an AI-native organic growth agency: AI agents alongside senior experts. Toku scored 97.8% AI visibility on "best stablecoin payroll providers", the highest of any brand on that prompt, in a 30-day Peec AI reading ending 19 August 2026. Engagements start from $5k a month, across three Autopilot tiers, with kickoff within 48 hours of signature and the first fixes and calibration articles shipping the same week. You can see what that looks like for SaaS teams. The full cost model for agency against in-house is in our in-house SEO vs agency breakdown, and our published prices are on the pricing page.

Whichever row you pick, budget for the person who checks the agent's work. For a B2B SaaS team, that person also has to know the product well enough to catch a claim a buyer would question on a sales call. Without an editor or an engineer, the subscription is the smallest line in the real cost.

Questions to ask before you buy an SEO agent

Put these to any vendor, and to yourself if you plan to build. A good answer names a specific step. A vague answer means the step does not exist.

  1. Who checks the facts, and is it someone other than the writer? Ask where a second check happens after the draft is written.
  2. Can every number be traced? Ask to see the source behind each statistic in a sample article.
  3. Who decides what goes live? Ask which settings let the agent publish on its own, and who can switch them off.
  4. What can it change besides the article? Ask which parts of your site and CMS it can write to.
  5. Does it know whether Google has found the page? Ask whether anything confirms the page is indexed after it goes live.
  6. Who is accountable when it is wrong? The vendor's quality gate does not change whose name is on the page, so decide who reads each piece before it ships.

Google is clear that AI help is allowed. Its guidance says generative AI can be useful for research and for adding structure to original content. It also warns that "using generative AI tools or other similar tools to generate many pages without adding value for users may violate" its spam policy on scaled content abuse.

Frequently asked questions.

Answers to the questions readers ask most about this topic.

What is an SEO agent?
An SEO agent is software that does SEO work across several steps, such as research, drafting, publishing or tracking AI answers, using live data and tools and choosing its own next step. There are four types: monitoring agents, content agents, execution agents that change the live site, and builders such as Claude, Gumloop or n8n where you assemble your own. Ahrefs notes that most good ones have human approval steps built in.
Can ChatGPT do SEO?
ChatGPT, like any chatbot used on its own, has no access to your rankings, search volumes or Search Console data. It can explain and draft, and connected to SEO tools through MCP (Model Context Protocol) it can reach a subset of each provider's data and run parts of the work. Claude's free plan includes connecting apps and tools. You still need checks on facts, prices and the published page, because the chatbot will not run those on its own.
Which AI agent is best for SEO?
We found no neutral benchmark, and most of the pages that rank SEO agents are written by vendors. Pick by the job: a monitoring agent such as Profound, Peec AI or Otterly.AI to track AI answers, a content agent such as Frase, Surfer, Writesonic, The SEO Agent or seo.ai to draft, an execution agent such as Alli AI to change the live site, or a builder such as Claude, Gumloop, n8n or Letaido to assemble your own.
Can I use AI to do my SEO?
Yes, within Google's rules. Google says generative AI can be useful for researching a topic and adding structure to original content, and warns that generating many pages without adding value for users may violate its spam policy on scaled content abuse, however the pages are made. In practice, AI can do much of the research and drafting, while a person checks facts, prices, the rendered page and indexing.
How much does an SEO expert cost compared with an SEO agent?
Entry paid plans for the SEO agent tools we compared run from $17 a month (Claude Pro, billed annually) to $299 a month (Alli AI, billed monthly), where a US dollar price is published. Several offer a free plan or trial. Agencies cost more. Stackmatix prices AEO agency retainers from $2,000 to $30,000 or more a month, an Ahrefs survey last updated in August 2024 found the most common agency retainer was $500 to $1,000 a month, and LoudFace starts from $5k a month. An in-house AEO specialist costs $80,000 to $150,000 a year, per Stackmatix.
Is SEO still worth it in 2026?
Yes. Google's documentation says the best practices for SEO remain relevant for AI features in Google Search, such as AI Overviews and AI Mode, and that there are no additional requirements or special optimisations to appear in them. Getting indexed, answering the question in the first lines and earning mentions on the pages the engines retrieve are still the work. Agents can speed that work up. Someone still has to check it.
