The State of B2B SaaS SEO (2026 Report)

How does Google answer B2B software searches in 2026? A live panel of 180 searches shows an AI Overview on every one, the 1,546 sources those overviews cite, how often they cite the top result, and where YouTube, Reddit and review sites show up.

The short answerGoogle showed an AI Overview on all 180 B2B software searches we checked on 24 October 2026 (Google US, desktop), and cited the page ranking first on 40 of them (22.2%). YouTube was cited in 133 of the 180 overviews, and software companies' own sites were 52.0% of citations, 35.6% on 'best X' searches.

How we measured it

What we pulled. On 24 October 2026, between 19:28 and 19:35 UTC, we pulled one live Google results page for each of 180 searches through the DataForSEO SERP API. Settings: United States, English, desktop, signed out, first page only, with the AI Overview fully loaded. Thirty of the 180 were pulled again on mobile the same evening as a check.

The panel. 30 B2B software categories, each searched six ways:

  1. The category term ("crm software", "payroll software")
  2. A list query ("best crm software")
  3. A definition ("what is crm")
  4. A pricing query ("crm software pricing")
  5. A comparison of two category leaders ("salesforce vs hubspot")
  6. An alternatives query for a category leader ("salesforce alternatives")

The 30 categories: CRM, project management, HRIS, payroll, accounting, expense management, applicant tracking, help desk, marketing automation, email marketing, e-signature, password management, endpoint security, SIEM, data warehouse, ETL and data integration, business intelligence, product analytics, sales engagement, contract management, ERP, video conferencing, knowledge management, observability, identity and access management, compliance automation, subscription billing, AP automation, learning management and customer data platforms. We chose the categories and the vendor pairs, so this is a fixed panel of common software searches. It does not sample everything B2B buyers type.

What "cited" means. Every link an overview cites, from three places: the reference cards Google shows beside the overview, the references attached to each part of the overview, and the numbered footnote links in its text. We de-duplicated them by URL within each search. Links on product names inside the overview text are left out. The API's card list on its own held exactly 3 links on 162 of the 180 overviews, so we counted all three places. The median overview cited 9 sources.

How we sorted the sources. We put every cited domain in one of six groups:

  • Software companies: the vendor's own site, blog or docs
  • Independent publishers and reference sites: media, Wikipedia, education sites, consultancies and personal blogs
  • Forums and social: Reddit, Quora, X, Facebook and similar communities
  • Review and analyst sites: Gartner, G2, Capterra and similar
  • Video: YouTube
  • Google Shopping product panels: links back to Google's own product listings

For the organic results we only counted forums, video and review sites, using the same domain lists as the citations. We did not split the rest of page 1 into vendors and publishers, so you will not find a "vendor share of page 1" number here.

How to cite it: LoudFace, "The State of B2B SaaS SEO (2026 Report)", loudface.co/blog/state-of-b2b-saas-seo, data pulled 24 October 2026. Quote any figure and reuse the tables with that attribution and a link.

Our earlier State of B2B SaaS Marketing and AI Search report covers budgets and buyer behaviour, and The State of B2B SaaS Content Marketing covers content formats. Neither is repeated here.

How often does Google show an AI Overview on software searches?

Every time, in our panel. All 180 searches carried an AI Overview, and each of the six query types went 30 for 30. It sat at the top of the results on 179 of them. On the one exception, "best business password manager", it sat second. None was a stub: the shortest ran to about 1,450 characters. The mobile re-check matched, 30 of 30.

The rest of the first page is crowded too. A People Also Ask box appeared on 168 of 180 searches (93.3%) and a "Discussions and forums" block on 59 (32.8%).

Public figures for search as a whole run far lower, and each study counts a different set of keywords:

  • Ahrefs checked 146M desktop results pages from September 2025 and found that "AI Overviews appear on 20.5% of all SERPs (29,991,998 out of 146,122,391)." Technology categories ran higher: "Internet & Telecom ( 30.3% )" and "Computers & Electronics ( 28.6% )".
  • seoClarity, across more than 500M US keywords, reported that "AIOs now appear for 30% of U.S. desktop keywords", up from 10% in March 2025.
  • BrightEdge found that "AIO presence has grown from roughly 30% to 48% of tracked queries over the past year", February 2025 to February 2026. In an earlier study it listed B2B tech among the early adopters and found "100% AI Overview adoption in technical subcategories", naming CI/CD and security management.

BrightEdge's intent-hierarchy page tracked B2B tech as a set, starting at 34.2% coverage in May 2024, and lists it among the early adopters with steady growth. Ahrefs placed its two technology categories above its 20.5% average. Read our 180 of 180 as a figure for common software searches. It says nothing about search as a whole.

Ahrefs also reported that "5.5% of AIO keywords are considered Commercial, 1.2% Transactional, and just 0.1% Navigational", and that overviews appear on 57.9% of question queries. The 5.5% describes the make-up of the keywords that showed an overview in September 2025, so it gives no rate for how often a commercial search gets one. In our October 2026 panel, the commercial searches ("best X", pricing and alternatives) carried an overview 90 times out of 90.

The audience is large. Google reported in July 2025 that "AI Overviews now has over 2 billion monthly users across more than 200 countries and territories and 40 languages". In July 2026 it said AI Mode had "surpassed 1 billion monthly active users" and that it had brought AI Overviews and AI Mode together into one Search experience.

So plan as if every software search your buyer types opens with a generated answer. In our data it does.

What do AI Overviews cite on B2B software searches?

Software companies' own pages supply about half of what the overviews cite, and YouTube supplies far more than its organic footprint suggests. The 180 overviews cited 1,546 sources:

Source typeCitationsShare
Software companies' own sites80452.0%
Independent publishers and reference sites27417.7%
YouTube26917.4%
Review and analyst sites936.0%
Forums and social825.3%
Google Shopping product panels241.6%

The mix moves with the question:

Query typeSoftware companies' share of citations
"what is X"65.0%
Pricing55.6%
Category term ("crm software")54.7%
"X alternatives"49.4%
"A vs B"47.5%
"best X"35.6%

On definitions, your own explainer page has a real shot. On "best X" searches, the moment a buyer builds a shortlist, software companies fell to 35.6% and YouTube rose to 26.9%. Independent publishers took 19.4%, review and analyst sites 10.6%, forums 6.9% and Google Shopping panels 0.5%.

Every site cited in 12 or more of the 180 overviews:

  • youtube.com: 133 overviews (73.9%)
  • reddit.com: 61 overviews (33.9%)
  • gartner.com: 42 overviews (23.3%)
  • g2.com: 23 overviews (12.8%)
  • zapier.com: 19
  • en.wikipedia.org: 17
  • salesforce.com: 17
  • pcmag.com: 16
  • forbes.com: 14
  • microsoft.com: 14
  • ibm.com: 12

YouTube showed up in nearly three of every four overviews, more than twice as many as Reddit. Among review sites, gartner.com was cited in 42 overviews and G2's main site, g2.com, in 23, close to two to one. If your review-site plan is "get more G2 reviews", look at whether Gartner's pages for your category exist and what they say about you.

The large public datasets put YouTube on top as well. Ahrefs measured June 2025 and found "YouTube is a clear favorite in Perplexity (16.1%) and AI Overviews (9.5%)", with "Reddit and Quora rank high only in AI Overviews (7.4% & 3.6%)." By March 2026 it reported that "YouTube is the most cited domain in AI Overviews today, and has grown 34% over the last six months." BrightEdge found that "Reddit citations grew roughly 84% between February and July 2026", and that "Google AI Overviews carries roughly 88% of Reddit's total AI citation volume across the window." Our software panel lines up on YouTube, with a different query set and a different count.

Set against the organic results on the same pages, the overview leans much harder on video. YouTube was 17.4% of overview citations against 2.5% of organic results, and review and analyst sites 6.0% against 4.8%. Forums moved the other way: they were 5.3% of overview citations and 7.6% of organic results. Reddit still appeared in 61 overviews, usually as one link among many.

That fits what we see on the agency-buying questions we track in AI answers: each engine trusts a different set of sources, and Google's overview leans on YouTube and Reddit. A Google plan is now a distribution plan as much as a page plan.

Does ranking first still get you cited?

On fewer than one search in four. The overview cited the exact page ranking first on 40 of 180 searches (22.2%) and any page from the first result's site on 53 (29.4%). Of the 1,546 citations, 304 (19.7%) were pages that also appeared among the same search's first-page organic results, and 452 (29.2%) came from a site with a page-1 result. About one citation in five comes from the first-page organic results.

It varies by query type. The share of overview citations that also ranked on page 1:

Query typeOverview citations also ranking on page 1
Pricing30.0%
"A vs B"29.0%
"what is X"22.6%
"X alternatives"12.4%
Category term12.2%
"best X"11.6%

The page ranking first was cited on 10 of 30 definition searches, 8 of 30 pricing searches, 8 of 30 "A vs B" searches, 5 of 30 "best X" searches, 5 of 30 alternatives searches and 4 of 30 category-term searches.

The public studies measure overlap in different ways, and their numbers spread accordingly:

  • seoClarity, across 362,000 US queries in October 2025: "AIO citations overlap with top 10 results 32% of the time; overlap hits 89% when only 1 source is cited." It adds that "URLs ranking in position one are cited 43% of the time, dropping steadily to just 7% at position 20."
  • Ahrefs, across 863K results pages and 4M overview URLs: "37.9% of URLs cited in AI Overviews also appeared within the first 10 blocks", down from about 76% in July 2025.
  • BrightEdge tracked overlap over a five-month window, February to July 2025, and found that "Only about 17% of sources cited in AIOs also rank in the organic top 10". Its current industry snapshot, on the page published February 2026, puts B2B tech at 22.6%.
  • BrightEdge, in a separate 16-month study published September 18, 2025 (data from May 2024 to September 2025), counted citations that rank anywhere in the organic results it tracks and put B2B tech at 71.0%. The same study found "Only 16.7% of citations come from top 10 results".

Our 22.2% for the first result sits well below seoClarity's 43%. seoClarity measured the same thing, how often the page in position one gets cited, across 362,000 queries in October 2025. Ours is a narrower panel of software searches only, a year later, and each study extracts citations its own way. Read our figure as a direction for software searches in October 2026, rather than a precise rate: the top result was cited on fewer than one search in four.

A page-1 ranking still puts you in the pool the overview draws from. On pricing and comparison searches, about three in ten citations came from the first-page organic results. On "best X" and alternatives searches that share fell to 11.6% and 12.4%, so most of what the overview cites on those searches comes from outside page 1. You need to be on the pages the overview trusts, too.

Who else shows up on page one?

In the organic results, forums and review sites, on the searches closest to a purchase. Inside the overview, YouTube.

  • Reddit held an organic page-1 result on 80 of 180 searches (44.4%). On "A vs B" searches it held one on 25 of 30, on "alternatives" searches 21 of 30.
  • Any forum (Reddit, Quora, X, Spiceworks Community, Facebook and similar) held an organic page-1 result on 97 of 180 searches (53.9%).
  • Counting everything on page 1 (the overview's citations, the organic results and the "Discussions and forums" block), a forum appeared on 131 of 180 searches (72.8%): 29 of 30 "alternatives" searches, 28 of 30 "A vs B" searches and 26 of 30 "best X" searches, against 15 of 30 definition searches and 14 of 30 pricing searches.
  • Review and analyst sites were cited in 75 of 180 overviews (41.7%), including 19 of 30 "best X" and 19 of 30 "alternatives" overviews, against 2 of 30 definition overviews. In the organic results they held a page-1 spot on 62 of 180 searches (34.4%).
  • YouTube was cited in 133 of 180 overviews, while holding 38 of the 1,525 organic results.

In raw organic slots, forums held 116 of the 1,525 organic results (7.6%), review sites 73 (4.8%) and YouTube 38 (2.5%). Those small shares of slots are spread across a large share of searches, and they cluster where a buyer is choosing.

Buyers say they use those pages. SurveyMonkey and Reddit published the study as co-branded research and describe it as "This Reddit survey, powered by SurveyMonkey", run "among a sample of 1,202 business decision-makers in the United States". It found that "23% of decision-makers have used Reddit for research, including a third (32%) of software buyers." Reddit sponsored the survey, so it has an interest in the answer. The page-1 data above is independent of it and points the same way.

Do "alternatives" searches cite the vendor being replaced?

Usually they leave it out. On the 30 "X alternatives" searches ("salesforce alternatives", "zendesk alternatives" and so on), the overview cited the named vendor's own site on 7 of 30: Chargebee, Confluence (through atlassian.com), Docebo, Expensify, LastPass, NetSuite and Salesforce. Software companies supplied 49.4% of alternatives citations with the named vendor included, and other software companies alone 45.0%. Review and analyst sites were cited in 19 of the 30 alternatives overviews, and a forum appeared somewhere on page 1 for 29 of 30. One of the 30, "greenhouse alternatives", was meant as the Greenhouse recruiting software but returned mostly gardening results; it stays in every count.

If you are the vendor being replaced, your own site rarely gets a say in that answer. If you are the challenger, other software companies' pages made up 45.0% of the citations, so an honest alternatives page on your site can be one of them, next to the review pages and threads where your buyers compare you.

What should a 2027 SEO plan change?

Rankings stay in the plan. They feed the pool the overview draws from. What changes is what you count and where you publish.

  1. Track whether you are cited, as well as where you rank. On "best X" searches, 11.6% of overview citations ranked on page 1, and across the panel the top result was cited on 40 of 180 searches. A position report alone misses most of the sources the overview draws on. Start with Google's overview: it updates from Google's live index, so in our experience it is the first AI surface to pick up a new page, and it appeared on every search in our panel.
  2. Own your definitions on your own site. "What is X" overviews drew 65.0% of their citations from software companies and cited the top-ranking page on 10 of 30 searches, the most of any query type. A clear, current explainer for your category's core terms is the overview citation most within your control.
  3. Put the shortlist answers on video. YouTube was cited in 133 of 180 overviews and supplied 26.9% of the citations on "best X" searches, while holding 2.5% of organic results. A short video that answers the category or comparison question your buyer types gives the overview a source type it uses heavily.
  4. Build the review-site and forum footprint for shortlist searches. Review and analyst sites were cited in 19 of 30 "best X" and 19 of 30 alternatives overviews, gartner.com in 42 overviews and g2.com in 23. A forum appeared on page 1 for 29 of 30 alternatives searches. That means accurate Gartner and G2 category pages and real answers in the Reddit threads that rank for your category. Earned, never astroturfed.
  5. Publish honest comparison and alternatives pages. "A vs B" overviews drew 47.5% of citations from software companies and 29.0% from first-page organic results, and alternatives overviews drew 45.0% from software companies other than the named vendor. A comparison that states where each product fits, with numbers, is a page the overview can use.

What are the limits of this data?

  • A fixed panel, one day, one market. 180 searches we chose, pulled once on 24 October 2026 from Google US in English, on desktop, signed out. The mobile check covers 30 of them. Results vary by day, location and account.
  • Software searches only. The panel is common B2B software queries. It says nothing about local, shopping or news searches.
  • Citations are links. We counted the reference cards, each part's references and the numbered footnote links, de-duplicated by URL per search, a median of 9 per overview. Links on product names in the overview text were excluded, and an overview can name a brand without linking to it, so an unlinked mention is invisible here.
  • Domain classification. We sorted the 1,546 citations by domain into six groups. A few sites sit on a border, such as a software company's publisher-style blog. Organic results were only classified for forums, video and review sites, using the same domain lists as the citations.
  • One ambiguous search. "greenhouse alternatives" was meant as the Greenhouse applicant tracking system, but Google returned a gardening overview and mostly gardening results. It stays in every total, so the alternatives figures are out of 30 including it.
  • Public studies differ in method. Ahrefs, seoClarity and BrightEdge each sample different keywords and define overlap differently. Quote each figure with its source.
