SEO Consultant Rates for B2B SaaS in 2026: Published Prices and What They Buy

What SEO consultants, freelancers and fractional SEO leads charge in 2026, read from their own sites on 29 October 2026: hourly, monthly and project rates, what each band buys and leaves out, and why the surveys disagree.

The short answerIn 2026, the three SEO consultants we checked that publish an hourly rate charge $175 to $200 an hour. A senior SaaS consultant on retainer publishes $3,500 to $10,000 a month, and most fractional head-of-SEO plans sit between $1,999 and $9,999 a month. Advice-led and fractional fees usually leave out content, links and development.

We read every price on 29 October 2026 from a US connection, on each provider's own page, in a real browser except Upwork, which blocks browsers and was read through a text reader. No browser-read price in the table is shown crossed out on its source page; that check was not run for Upwork. Survey figures come from each survey publisher's own page, never from a roundup that repeats them.

How much does an SEO consultant cost per hour in 2026?

The three consultants we checked who put an hourly number on their own site charge $175 to $200 an hour. That is a small, checkable group, and it is a better guide than any average.

TM Blast charges $175 an hour, and most projects take 1 to 4 hours. Greg Kristan scopes the time on a free 30-minute scoping call, and extra hours are billed at the same rate only with your go-ahead. MediaSesh charges $200 for a one-hour consult. Lead to Conversion, an agency that also sells consulting by the hour, starts at $200 an hour with a 10-hour minimum, which makes it a $2,000 entry ticket.

Two sellers package the hour differently. Olga Zarr's $999 consultation is a 90-minute live session inside what she counts as 5 hours of total expert time, including the call, 90 minutes of her prep, an optional 30-minute discovery call and an hour of follow-up email support. By her 5-hour count, that works out to about $200 per hour of expert time, or $666 per live hour. Rock The Rankings, a B2B SaaS SEO agency, sells a 60-minute recorded Power Hour for $500, run by the founder, with a prioritised action plan you keep.

The surveys land close to that, with caveats you should read before quoting them in a budget meeting.

  • Ahrefs (439 SEO providers, page updated August 2024) puts consultancies at $171.18 an hour, against $98.90 for agencies and $71.59 for freelancers. Those averages are computed from the top of each price band, so they run high. The same page says consultants most often charge $100 to $150 an hour.
  • Credo puts US SEO consultants at $144.68 an hour and $139.29 worldwide, on a page last updated in February 2023. Its survey hub names no survey year for the SEO chapter, and dates its separate agency hourly-rate chapter to the 2019 survey.
  • Experience moves the rate. Ahrefs found $73.05 an hour for SEOs in business for two years or less, rising to $118.35 for 10+ years. MarketerHire's guide, which states no method, puts entry-level consultants at $50 to $75, mid-level at $75 to $100 and experts at $100 to $150.

Is $300 an hour normal? It exists, and it is rare. Ahrefs found that 90% charge $150 an hour or less, and only 4.1% charge $201 or more. Among providers in the US and Canada, 66.7% charge $75 to $200 an hour. Our consultant vs agency comparison puts an AEO consultant at $150 to $300 an hour; the published hourly rates above sit in the lower half of that range. A $300 quote should come with a reason you can check, such as a named specialism or a migration on the line.

What do SEO consultants charge per month and per project?

Monthly retainers are where the published prices spread the most, because "consultant" covers three different jobs: advice only, advice plus some hands-on work, and one operator doing most of the work.

Bill Widmer, an independent SaaS SEO consultant, publishes his own range: "$3,500 to $10,000 a month." He frames it as "one operator with 13 years of receipts doing the actual work". At the other end, Carson Digital sells AI-assisted plans for small businesses at $350, $850 and $1,700 a month, month-to-month, and says plainly that the price sits below the consultant average in Ahrefs' survey because AI does the data gathering. That is a different buyer from a Series B SaaS team.

Some consultants price by deliverable. Taylor Scher, a SaaS SEO consultant, says his deliverable-based pricing "could be $2,000 for an SEO audit, $3,000 for consulting, or $5,000+ for consulting, content, and link building." Read that as indicative, since he says "could be".

The survey numbers for the same units:

  • Ahrefs: consultants average $3,250 a month on retainer, and most often charge $2,501 to $5,000 a month. Freelancers average $1,348.63 a month. Consultant projects most often cost $5,001 to $10,000.
  • Credo, across its 383 respondents who do SEO for clients: half of SEO providers set a retainer minimum under $3,000 a month, and 15% set a minimum of $5,000 a month or more. On billing, 48% offer hourly billing and 61.1% offer monthly billing.
  • Credo's separate chapter on digital marketing consultants across all channels puts their average at $141.67 an hour, and 73.49% have a monthly retainer minimum under $3,000.

If a consultant quotes a one-off audit, compare it with the published audit prices in our SEO audit cost guide before you sign.

What does a fractional head of SEO cost?

A fractional head of SEO is a senior lead who owns your SEO roadmap part-time on a monthly fee. Most published offers sit between $1,999 and $9,999 a month for leadership alone. With execution added, uSERP's bundle starts at $12,500 a month, Rock The Rankings' done-for-you agency tier from $8,650 a month on its 90-day rate, and LoudFace's agency retainer from $5,000.

  • Exalt Growth starts at $2,500 a month with a three-month minimum, for engagements that run 5 to 20 hours a week.
  • Otisar publishes $1,999, $4,999 and $9,999 a month. Bronze is pitched at "companies with limited resources to implement SEO related improvements"; Gold at companies where SEO is a key acquisition channel.
  • uSERP prices its Fractional Head of SEO at $6,500 a month, with complex engagements quoted from $9,500 a month. The $6,500 plan includes a weekly 30-minute working session and up to 4 hours a month of hands-on CMS fixes. Head of SEO plus Execution from $12,500 a month adds an execution scope from $6,000 a month. The term is three months, then monthly with 30 days' notice.
  • Baba SEO, based in Europe, starts at €7,500 a month over nine months, from €67,500 in total. The same page describes the wider market, without a source, as strategy-only advisory at €1,500 to €2,500 a month and an embedded lead at €3,000 to €6,000.

There is also the agency version of the same idea. Rock The Rankings sells a Strategy & Consulting tier where your team executes and the agency runs strategy, competitor analysis and QA on your content, priced from $5,500 a month on a 90-day term, $500 a month more month-to-month.

Fractional pricing tracks hours and seniority more than deliverables. Before you compare two offers, ask each for the hours per week and who attends your planning meetings.

What does each SEO rate band buy, and what does it leave out?

Every band below buys judgment. The advice-led and fractional bands mostly leave out the production that turns judgment into pages, links and fixes. The exceptions do some of the work: a hands-on consultant such as Bill Widmer does part of it himself, Taylor Scher prices consulting with content and link building at $5,000+, uSERP's $6,500 plan includes up to 4 hours a month of CMS fixes, and Upwork sells task execution by the hour.

Rate bandTypical published priceWhat you getWhat it leaves outBest for
Hourly advice$175 to $200 an hour, usually 1 to 10 hoursA senior answer to a specific problem: a traffic drop, a migration plan, a second opinionThe follow-through, since nobody owns the result after the callA team with an SEO owner who needs a senior check
Session or deliverable$500 to $3,000A recorded teardown, a working session, an audit or a written planThe implementation, unless you buy it separatelyA founder who wants a plan before hiring anyone
Monthly consultant$350 to $10,000 a monthA monthly advisory slot; at the top, one senior operator doing part of the workContent at volume, link building, developmentSeed to Series A with an in-house writer or developer
Fractional head of SEO$1,999 to $9,999 a monthRoadmap ownership, prioritisation, reviews, reportingProduction headcount, tools, development, linksA team that has writers and developers but no SEO lead
Strategy plus executionFrom $12,500 a month for uSERP's bundle; LoudFace's agency retainer starts at $5,000Leadership plus an agreed monthly production scopeThe work past the agreed production scopeA team that wants one owner for strategy and output

The exclusions are written on the providers' own pages. Exalt Growth's fractional offer "does not cover content production headcount, paid tooling licences, development resource, or link acquisition budget." uSERP says "Leadership-only engagements require a separate execution team or budget." Rock The Rankings moves content production and links to a higher tier than its consulting one.

That gap matters more than the hourly rate. An advice-only engagement leaves the foundation work to your own team: the technical fixes, the schema, the pages that need rewriting. If nobody in-house ships it, the roadmap sits in a doc. Link budgets are their own line item, priced in our link building pricing guide.

Marketplace rates are a different product again. Bill Widmer, comparing Upwork rates with consultant rates, put it well: "It is a different product: task execution, not strategy."

What does an SEO consultant really cost per month once you add execution?

Turn the hourly rate into a monthly number first, then add the work the consultant does not do.

Hourly to monthly. At 10 hours a month, a $175 rate is $1,750, and a $200 rate is $2,000, which is also Lead to Conversion's 10-hour minimum. At 20 hours a month, the same rates come to $3,500 to $4,000. At Ahrefs' consultancy average, 20 hours is about $3,424, and that figure is an upper bound because of how Ahrefs averaged.

Add execution. An advice-led consultant or fractional lead does not write your content, build links or ship development tickets. uSERP prices its own execution scope from $6,000 a month on top of leadership, and its combined offer starts at $12,500. Your own numbers will differ, but the shape holds: the consultant fee plus a production budget bought somewhere else.

Compare against an agency that ships. An agency retainer folds strategy and production into one fee, and our breakdown of B2B SaaS SEO and AEO retainer costs covers what those bands buy. LoudFace engagements start from $5k a month, with Solo at $5,000 a month, Dual at $8,000 to $12,000, and Scale at $15,000 to $18,000 and up, no setup fee.

Judge the fee against pipeline rather than hours. A simple payback check, with every input an assumption you replace with your own:

  • Monthly fee: $4,000 (20 hours at $200)
  • Average contract value: $30,000
  • Win rate on opportunities from organic search: 25%
  • Gross margin: 80%

$4,000 / ($30,000 × 0.25 × 0.80) = about 0.67 extra qualified opportunities a month to cover the fee. If the consultant's plan cannot plausibly produce that, because nobody will ship the pages, the hourly rate was never the problem.

When does an SEO consultant cost less than a hire?

Kyle Eggleston, an independent consultant who has done SEO since 2004, published a break-even estimate: below roughly 73 hours a month of senior SEO work, a consultant at $150 an hour costs less than a salaried hire with the same skills. His threshold rises to 93 hours if you need AI search skills. His method spreads in-house cost as salary divided by 0.70 over 2,080 paid hours a year.

Treat that as his model, and check it against your own salary data. If you need more senior hours than that every month, you are pricing a team rather than a consultant. The build-or-buy decision has its own page: in-house SEO vs agency for B2B SaaS. If you are choosing between a consultant and an agency, read AEO consultant vs AEO agency, which works through the choice by company stage.

Why do SEO consultant rate surveys disagree?

The published figures run from Upwork's $15 to $35 an hour to Ahrefs' $171.18. Both are real. They measure different populations, with different methods, in different years.

  • Ahrefs averages the top of each band. Its own method note says it assumes every surveyed SEO charges the upper end of their tier. That lifts the average, and the page is dated August 2024.
  • Credo is older. Its SEO pages were updated in 2022 and 2023, and its hub names no survey year for the SEO figures.
  • contractrates.fyi is self-reported. It shows a median of $75 an hour across 84 self-reported records, added between 2022 and 2025. The site warns that the dates show when records entered the database and say nothing about when the work was done.
  • YunoJuno is booking data from a global network. YunoJuno's booking data puts the average at $69 an hour, and its day rate is quoted in pounds, so the network leans toward the UK.
  • Upwork is a marketplace median for task work. As Bill Widmer says, that is execution bought by the hour.
  • whatshouldicharge.io is a model. It says SEO consultants charge $75 to $200 an hour in the US with a median of $125, built on wage data rather than consultant invoices.

Don't average these. Pick the population that matches the person you are hiring. For a senior consultant who will own your SaaS SEO direction, the named published prices above are the closest match, because each one is a price you can buy at today.

How should you check an SEO consultant's quote?

A price is only real once you read it on the provider's own pricing page in a browser. Roundups repeat survey numbers, and some pricing pages show a crossed-out anchor price beside the real one. Then ask five questions:

  1. How many hours a month does the fee buy? Divide the fee by the hours and compare it with the $175 to $200 that the three published hourly rates above charge.
  2. Who executes? If the answer is "your team", count your team's time in the cost.
  3. What is the minimum term? Exalt Growth asks for three months; uSERP for three months, then 30 days' notice; Carson Digital runs month-to-month.
  4. Which tools and data access are included? Exalt Growth excludes paid tooling licences, so ask each provider the same question.
  5. What will you report against? Ask for pipeline and qualified opportunities, with traffic as context.

Where does LoudFace sit on SEO consultant rates?

LoudFace is an agency rather than a consultant, so it does not sell hours. LoudFace engagements start from $5k a month, scoped on the intro call, with Solo, Dual and Scale tiers and no setup fee. The pricing page describes the engagement as owning "the roadmap, execution, and results", so the fee covers the work as well as the advice.

Kickoff is within 48 hours of signature, and the pricing page spells out the first week: "Access set up, Scoreboard live, the first fixes and calibration articles shipping in the same week. You meet your delivery team and see shipped work inside five days." The first month is the busiest of the engagement. If your plan is to hire a $3,500-a-month consultant and fund production separately, put both numbers next to the LoudFace floor before you decide. The SEO and AEO service page shows how the program runs.

Frequently asked questions.

Answers to the questions readers ask most about this topic.

How much does an SEO consultant cost per hour in 2026?
The three consultants we checked with a published hourly rate charge $175 to $200 an hour: TM Blast charges $175, MediaSesh $200 for one hour, and Lead to Conversion $200 with a 10-hour minimum. Surveys sit close: Ahrefs puts consultancies at $171.18 an hour, an upper-end average on a page dated August 2024, and Credo puts US SEO consultants at $144.68.
How much does an SEO consultant cost per month?
Published monthly prices run from $350 a month for an AI-assisted small-business plan from Carson Digital to $3,500 to $10,000 a month for Bill Widmer, an independent SaaS consultant. Ahrefs found consultants average $3,250 a month on retainer and most often charge $2,501 to $5,000 a month.
What does a fractional head of SEO cost?
Exalt Growth starts at $2,500 a month with a three-month minimum, Otisar publishes $1,999, $4,999 and $9,999 a month, and uSERP's Fractional Head of SEO is $6,500 a month. Baba SEO starts at €7,500 a month. Leadership-only plans exclude production, so uSERP's Head of SEO plus Execution starts at $12,500 a month.
Why are SEO rates on Upwork so low?
Upwork's median band for SEO experts is $15 to $35 an hour. In Bill Widmer's view, the marketplace mostly prices task execution, where consultant rates price strategy and judgment: "It is a different product: task execution, not strategy." Compare a marketplace quote with other marketplace quotes rather than with a consultant's rate.
Is $300 an hour a normal SEO consultant rate?
It exists, and it is rare. In Ahrefs' survey, 90% charge $150 an hour or less, and only 4.1% charge $201 or more. The three consultants we checked that publish an hourly rate on their own sites charge $175 to $200. A $300 quote should come with a specialism or a stake you can check, such as a site migration.
Should I pay an SEO consultant hourly or on a retainer?
Pay hourly for a defined problem, such as a traffic drop or a migration plan, where TM Blast says most projects take 1 to 4 hours. Pay a retainer when you want someone to own direction month after month. In Credo's survey, 48% of SEO providers offer hourly billing and 61.1% offer monthly billing.
Does an SEO consultant's fee include content and link building?
Usually not. Exalt Growth's fractional offer does not cover content production headcount, paid tooling licences, development resource, or link acquisition budget, and uSERP says leadership-only engagements require a separate execution team or budget. Budget for production separately, or price an agency retainer that includes it.
