Does Your Industry Change Which Agencies AI Recommends? 1,548 Answers From ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews (2026)

We read 1,548 answers from ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews to 12 agency questions. When the question named fintech or HR tech, most plain SaaS leaders were rarely named: Siege Media and Breaking B2B rose in fintech answers, SimpleTiger alone among the plain leaders held on in HR tech, and 59.8% of the distinct pages they cited named the industry.

The short answerYes, for the two industries we tested. Across 1,548 answers from ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews (20 September to 1 November 2026), Omniscient was named in 73.3% of answers to plain SaaS agency questions and 5.6% of answers to fintech and HR tech questions. Siege Media led fintech answers (56.6%); SimpleTiger led HR tech answers (39.5%).

Put "fintech" or "HR tech" in the question and the engines reach for a different set of firms. They name about as many firms per answer as plain answers do (3.0 against 3.1 by our wider count), but fewer of them are the agencies that dominate plain SaaS answers. The sources follow the industry too: 59.8% of the 435 distinct pages industry answers cite name the industry in the URL, and 84.5% of their citations go to such a page.

How we ran the study

We track buyer questions for LoudFace in Peec AI, which runs the same question on ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews each day and records each answer, the sources it cites, the searches the engine ran and the brands it names.

For this study we took 12 tracked agency questions, each one a question where LoudFace was named in under 10% of answers in the 30 days before we pulled the data, and split them by whether they name an industry.

4 industry questions. Three fintech: "SEO agency for fintech companies", "SEO and content agency for B2B fintech startups" and "Best agency for B2B fintech organic growth". One HR tech: "SEO agency for HR tech SaaS companies".

8 plain questions. "Best SEO agency for B2B SaaS companies", "Boutique SEO agency for B2B SaaS brands", "Best agency for B2B SaaS content and SEO", "Top B2B SaaS SEO agencies in 2026", "Best agency for growing SaaS organic traffic", "Which agency is best for SaaS organic traffic growth", "Who are the best B2B SaaS marketing agencies for organic growth" and "Agency for SaaS organic revenue growth".

The window runs 43 days, 20 September to 1 November 2026, on all three engines, with one answer per question, engine and day. That gives 43 answers per question per engine, 129 per question and 1,548 in all: 516 per engine, 516 industry answers (387 fintech, 129 HR tech) and 1,032 plain answers.

What counts as named. We use the same unit as Peec's visibility metric, which "measures the percentage of AI responses that mention your brand": an agency is named when Peec's brand detection lists it in the answer. Peec tracks 53 brands in our project. We left out two: LoudFace, which publishes this study, and GEO Agency, whose name is a generic phrase the detector cannot tell from ordinary words. That leaves 51 tracked agencies. 42 of them were named at least once in these answers.

The wider count. The tracked list is not the whole market, so we also counted every firm an answer sets out as a bold name or a link label (list numbering, padding and invisible characters stripped), matched against a reviewed list of 115 agencies and consultancies found in the answers, tracked or not. That rule misses names written in plain prose, so it undercounts (it finds Omniscient in 43.5% of plain answers where Peec finds 73.3%). We use it only to compare the two groups with each other.

What counts as a citation. A citation is one cited URL in one answer, so a page cited in many answers counts once for each of them. Shares of citations weight the pages the engines return to most. Where it matters we also give the share of distinct pages, counting each cited page once.

A check on the detector. We searched the text of every answer, links included, for the names of the 12 tracked agencies this study relies on most: Omniscient, Grow and Convert, Skale, SimpleTiger, Siege Media, Omnius, First Page Sage and TripleDart, plus Optimist, Breaking B2B, PipeRocket Digital and Technotize, matching each name as a whole word in any case (so the domain beomniscient.com does not count as Omniscient). For eight of them the text search and Peec's detection give the same share to the decimal in all three groups, and for three more they differ by 0.7 points or less. The twelfth, Grow and Convert, comes out at 39.7% of plain answers by text against 35.9% by Peec, and 0% of fintech answers either way. So for these agencies, the gaps below are not a detection miss.

Two HR tech names do need a note. Team 4 Agency, which our Peec project tracks, appears in the text of 16.3% of HR tech answers, but Peec recorded it in 3.9% (and in none of the fintech answers, against 2.8% by text). By text it would sit joint fifth in the HR tech top ten. Scale Theory appears in 16.3% of HR tech answers by text against 13.2% by Peec; each of the extra text hits is a link to Scale Theory's own list of HR tech agencies, not a recommendation of the firm. Peec's own count holds the same kind of reference: in 5 of the 17 HR tech answers where Peec records Scale Theory, the answer cites or describes its list rather than recommending the firm.

Most plain-question leaders almost disappear from industry answers

Share of answers naming each agency in the plain top ten:

The drop holds question by question. Omniscient's share ranged from 38.8% to 91.5% across the eight plain questions and from 1.6% to 14.0% across the four industry questions. Its weakest plain question still beat its strongest industry question by more than double.

It holds on each engine too: the first table shows Omniscient's drop on all three. ChatGPT named Skale in 67.2% of plain answers and 4.7% of fintech answers, and Grow and Convert in 64.8% of plain answers and in no fintech or HR tech answer at all. Across all three engines, Grow and Convert appeared in 0.2% of industry answers.

Three firms break the pattern. Siege Media and Breaking B2B rise in fintech answers and fall away in HR tech: Siege Media goes from 29.3% of plain answers to 56.6% of fintech answers and 1.6% of HR tech answers, Breaking B2B from 13.5% to 26.1% and 0%. SimpleTiger all but vanishes from fintech answers (0.3%) and keeps much of its place in HR tech answers (39.5%): 20.9% on ChatGPT, 46.5% on Perplexity and 51.2% on Google AI Overviews.

Fintech answers have their own leaders

Share of the 387 fintech answers naming each agency, with the same agency's share of plain answers:

The rest of the fintech top ten: Breaking B2B 26.1%, TripleDart 8.5%, Omniscient 6.5%, Directive Consulting 4.7%, Skale 4.4% and Revv Growth 4.4%.

Omnius is the clearest case. It was named in 7.5% of plain answers and 42.9% of fintech answers, and it led one of the three fintech questions outright ("SEO and content agency for B2B fintech startups", 49.6%). Siege Media led the other two.

The HR tech question has another set

HR tech is a single question in our set, "SEO agency for HR tech SaaS companies", so the figures below are 129 answers to one question.

Its top four, per engine, with the same agency's share of plain answers:

AgencyAll three enginesChatGPTPerplexityGoogle AI OverviewsPlain questions
SimpleTiger39.5%20.9%46.5%51.2%50.1%

PipeRocket Digital26.4%76.7%2.3%0%0.7%
Technotize23.3%58.1%9.3%2.3%1.2%

The rest of its top ten: Scale Theory 13.2%, Optimist 13.2%, First Page Sage 12.4%, DerivateX 10.9%, Skale 8.5% and Growpad 8.5%.

The engines split here. ChatGPT named PipeRocket Digital in 76.7% of its HR tech answers, Technotize in 58.1% and TripleDart in 55.8%. Across all engines, plain answers named PipeRocket Digital in 0.7%, Technotize in 1.2% and TripleDart in 3.3%. Perplexity and Google AI Overviews leaned on SimpleTiger instead.

The two industries' rosters differ too. Their top tens have four tracked agencies in common: First Page Sage, Optimist, TripleDart and Skale. Siege Media, the fintech leader, was named in 1.6% of HR tech answers. The plain top ten shares five agencies with the fintech top ten and two with the HR tech top ten (SimpleTiger and Skale).

Some first picks still come from the plain pool. Of the 455 industry answers that named a tracked agency, 55.6% put first an agency that also appeared in that engine's plain answers on the same day.

Industry answers name about as many firms, fewer of them tracked

Count only the 51 tracked agencies and industry answers look thin: 2.2 per answer against 4.1 for plain answers, and 11.8% named none of them against 6.9%. Perplexity named no tracked agency in 27.9% of industry answers.

The wider count closes that gap. By bold names and link labels, industry answers named 3.0 firms each and plain answers 3.1. They also drew on a field at least as wide from half as many answers: 84 distinct firms across the 516 industry answers against 80 across the 1,032 plain answers. Answer length does not separate the groups either. Median words, industry vs plain: ChatGPT 456 vs 479, Perplexity 46 vs 52, Google AI Overviews 279.5 vs 266.

The difference is who gets named. Many industry answers name firms our Peec project does not track. By the wider count, CSTMR appeared in 25.8% of fintech answers, Mint Position in 20.4% and Mint Studios in 15.0%. In HR tech answers, GrowthMode Marketing appeared in 17.8% and Walker Sands in 14.7%.

Two answers show it. ChatGPT, asked "SEO and content agency for B2B fintech startups" on 19 October, shortlisted five firms: Breaking B2B, Optimist, Mint Position, CSTMR and Siege Media. Peec recorded three of them. Google AI Overviews, asked the HR tech question on 26 September, named SimpleTiger, GrowthMode Marketing, Your Content Mart, Team 4 Marketing and Walker Sands. Three of those five (GrowthMode Marketing, Your Content Mart and Walker Sands) are outside the agencies our project tracks. Team 4 is tracked, and Peec missed it in this answer: it recorded SimpleTiger only.

Where industry answers get their sources

The cited pages follow the industry word. Per engine, as shares of citations, with the same figures for distinct pages in the last row:

EngineIndustry answers: citations to a URL that names the industryCitations to a URL that looks like a ranked list (industry vs plain)Industry answers: citations to a URL also cited in plain answers
ChatGPT84.9%23.6% vs 45.0%0.8%
Perplexity89.6%54.7% vs 91.4%5.4%
Google AI Overviews81.7%46.8% vs 73.3%9.1%
All three84.5% of 2,477 citations43.2% vs 70.6%6.2%
All three, distinct pages59.8% of 435 pages39.3% vs 55.3%13.8%

"Name the industry" means the URL contains, in any case, fintech, financ (as in finance or financial), payment or bank for fintech answers, and hr-tech or hrtech, hr as a separate word, human-resources, hris, payroll or recruit for HR tech answers. Only 0.6% of the citations in plain answers, and 0.6% of the distinct pages they cite, go to a URL containing any of those terms. "Looks like a ranked list" means the URL contains best, top, -agencies, ranked or alternatives.

Industry answers lean on different pages more than on different sites. Only 6.2% of the citations in industry answers went to a URL a plain answer also cited, but 65.6% went to a domain the plain answers also cited. So most industry citations land on a site the plain answers also used, on a page they never cited. Counted once per page, the overlap is wider and the pattern holds: of the 435 distinct pages industry answers cited, 13.8% were also cited in a plain answer and 57.5% sat on a domain the plain answers cited. The most-cited domains in fintech answers were speargrowth.com (6.9% of citations), breakingb2b.com (6.3%) and yesoptimist.com (5.6%). In HR tech answers: scaletheory.ai (9.4%), seo-growup.com (8.2%) and hrtechsaas.com (7.4%). In plain answers: beomniscient.com (6.7%), growandconvert.com (4.6%) and youtube.com (4.3%).

The searches carry the industry word too. Peec records the searches ChatGPT and Perplexity ran before answering. It records none for AI Overviews in our data, though Google says that AI Overviews and AI Mode may use a "query fan-out" technique, which it describes as "issuing multiple related searches across subtopics and data sources". Of 283 searches behind industry answers, 98.9% kept the industry word: 98.8% on ChatGPT and all 26 on Perplexity. Of 661 searches behind plain answers, none contained it and 98.5% contained "saas". We wrote more on these searches in fan-out queries.

Our read, which the data does not prove: the industry word travels from the question into the searches, the searches find industry pages, and the answer names the firms on those pages. The three move together in our data. It does not show which step decides the names.

Omniscient tops seven of the eight plain questions and none of the four industry questions.

If you are choosing an agency

This is our read of the data, and the study did not test it.

  1. Ask with your industry in the question, and without it. The plain question gets you the agencies that dominate generic SaaS answers. The industry question gets you a different mix, and the pages behind it mostly name the industry. In our data the fintech top ten shared five agencies with the plain top ten, and the HR tech top ten shared two. You want to see both lists.
  2. Ask more than one engine. Optimist was named in 40.3% of fintech answers on Google AI Overviews and 12.4% on Perplexity. Treat one engine's shortlist as one sample of the market.
  3. Look past the famous names. Industry answers often named firms outside the 51 agencies our Peec project tracks: CSTMR in 25.8% of fintech answers, Mint Position in 20.4%, and GrowthMode Marketing in 17.8% of HR tech answers.
  4. Open the page behind the name. 59.8% of the distinct pages cited in industry answers named the industry in the URL, and those pages drew 84.5% of the citations. Check whether that page shows industry clients and results, or only puts the word in the title.

We publish ranked agency lists for fintech and HR tech if you want a starting shortlist for either industry.

If you want the engines to name you in your industry

Plain-question rank mostly did not carry over. In our data most of the agencies named in plain SaaS answers were rarely named once the question said fintech or HR tech, and several of the agencies leading those answers were rarely named in plain ones (Omnius in 7.5% of plain answers, TripleDart in 3.3%).

Our read: industry answers read industry pages. Placement on generic SaaS lists covers the plain questions. For an industry question, the pages that count are the fintech or HR tech version: an industry service page on your own site, and placement on the industry lists the engines already cite. We covered how to get onto cited lists in getting into the best-of lists AI answers pull from.

It also argues, in our view, for picking an industry the plain-question leaders do not own. Omniscient was named in 6.5% of fintech answers against 73.3% of plain ones.

For other cuts of the same kind of data, see our studies on how the question is phrased, funding stage, SEO versus AI search agencies and whether the three engines name the same agencies.

Limitations

  • Two industries, four questions. Three questions are fintech and one is HR tech, so the HR tech results are one question's answers. The study says nothing about other industries.
  • Wording. The industry and plain questions differ in more than the industry word: the plain ones all say SaaS (five of the eight say B2B SaaS), and some ask for the best or the top. Omniscient's per-question shares show the gap on every question pair, but the study cannot separate the industry from the rest of the wording.
  • The tracked set. The main count sees 51 agencies. Industry answers name many firms outside that set, which is why we report the wider count beside it.
  • The wider count. It matches bold names and link labels against a list we built from the answers. It misses names in plain prose and any firm not on the list.
  • The URL rules. "Names the industry" and "looks like a ranked list" are judged from the URL alone; we did not open each page.
  • The window. 43 days, one answer per question per engine per day.

Frequently asked questions.

Answers to the questions readers ask most about this topic.

Does naming your industry change which agencies ChatGPT recommends?
In our study it did. ChatGPT named Omniscient in 84.9% of answers to plain SaaS agency questions, in no answer to the three fintech questions and in 4.7% of answers to the HR tech question. Siege Media went the other way: 71.3% of ChatGPT's fintech answers named it. The window was 20 September to 1 November 2026.
Which agencies do AI engines name for fintech SEO?
Across 387 answers to three fintech questions, the most-named tracked agencies were Siege Media (56.6%), Omnius (42.9%), First Page Sage (27.9%), Optimist (26.4%) and Breaking B2B (26.1%). By our wider count, the answers also named firms our Peec project does not track, led by CSTMR (25.8%) and Mint Position (20.4%).
Which agencies do AI engines name for HR tech SaaS SEO?
For the one HR tech question in our study, 'SEO agency for HR tech SaaS companies', the most-named tracked agencies across 129 answers were SimpleTiger (39.5%), TripleDart (34.1%), PipeRocket Digital (26.4%) and Technotize (23.3%). SimpleTiger's share was 20.9% on ChatGPT, 46.5% on Perplexity and 51.2% on Google AI Overviews.
Do AI engines name fewer agencies when you name an industry?
Fewer tracked ones and about as many in total, in our study of fintech and HR tech questions. Industry answers named 2.2 of the 51 agencies Peec tracks for us, against 4.1 for plain answers. Counting every bold name and link label, they named 3.0 firms against 3.1. Industry answers often named firms our Peec project does not track, such as CSTMR and Mint Position.
What pages do AI engines cite for industry agency questions?
Mostly pages about the industry. Of the 435 distinct pages cited in fintech and HR tech answers, 59.8% named the industry in the URL and 13.8% were also cited in plain SaaS answers. Counted per citation, 84.5% went to a URL naming the industry and 6.2% to a URL plain answers also cited. The most-cited fintech domains were speargrowth.com, breakingb2b.com and yesoptimist.com.
How was the study run?
12 agency questions LoudFace tracks in Peec AI, 4 naming fintech or HR tech and 8 plain SaaS questions, each run on ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews from 20 September to 1 November 2026, keeping one answer per question, engine and day: 1,548 answers, 516 per engine. An agency counted as named when Peec's brand detection listed it; LoudFace and GEO Agency were excluded.
